The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
